Over the last decade, weddings have been shaped by a number of factors — social media, websites like WeddingSutra, societal trends and celebrity weddings to name a few. There was a time when celebrity weddings like Anushka-Virat, Deepika-Ranveer or Priyanka-Nick, shaped how couples envision their weddings as they drew inspiration from these star-studded affairs. But many social commentators believe that celebrity weddings have lost their sheen over the years for many reasons – paparazzi generating millions of images that are all over the internet, celebrities choosing conventional templatized weddings over ceremonies that are trendsetting and wholeheartedly unique, or pandemic affecting how celebrities planned to wed. Or our obsession with celebrities is still so strong that we’re inevitably going to want to know all the details of their weddings?

Celebrities are well, celebrities! They don’t alone make trends. It’s real women and their real stories who inspire a large number of women today, including brides-to-be. Indian women have the most varied wardrobe, so it’s not a surprise to see that the Indian bride’s wardrobe is just as large and diverse and is a huge canvas for her expression. One has been privy to Sonam Kapoor Ahuja who has carried off so many looks with comfort and style: be it a traditional Anuradha Vakil kurta or a modern Indian ensemble by Anamika Khanna! A boho kaftan and lehengas in bright red and pastel tones completed her bridal wardrobe. Bollywood brides who aren’t afraid to stay true to their style or step away from convention get the thumbs-up, the best example would be Kareena Kapoor who wore her mother-in-law’s dress with such elan.

Bollywood brides who set new trends or who express ‘the real me’ will be adored – Rhea Kapoor wearing Indian with sneakers, Sonam Kapoor’s husband adopting her surname, Deepika Padukone wearing a traditional Kanjeevaram gifted by her mother.

More than the designer, or the cuts/ colors/ silhouettes of their ensembles, it’s the confluence of unique elements including jewelry and other accessories that complement their union and celebrations which will draw inspiration for a long time to come.

Katrina Kaif may be getting married at the new Six Senses which isn’t really a hotel designed for big, fat weddings. Many of her fans would like to see her marrying at a grand Palace like Umaid Bhawan or Falaknuma, and expect her to follow the standard protocol – host a 500 or 1000 pax post wedding reception. But times have changed, and Katrina and even other stars marrying in 2022 may opt to do things differently, making their luxe yet small celebrations more relatable to a discerning set and less appealing to the large numbers.

Hollywood, Bollywood and the legion of influencers across all social media will always play a huge part in setting fashion trends which will inspire many brides around the world when it comes to planning their looks for their Big Day. I do believe that Covid and it’s subsequent lockdowns inserted a few roadblocks in the last two years leading celebrations to an abrupt halt, the wardrobes were kept shut and fashionistas were forced to take a break. Well it’s all coming back now with a vengeance. The casual covid dress-code of pajamas, shorts, old tees and track pants are making their way into the back of the cupboards, and everyone will lap up huge doses of inspiration from tinsel town, and clearly, it’s here to stay!

Over time, Bollywood weddings have become more intimate and low key. In earlier times, it was a norm to invite the whole film industry, but now celebs prefer to have an intimate destination wedding with a select, small circle in tow. There’s no denying that the pandemic is responsible for popularising smaller celebrations but it is not likely to be the only future of Indian Weddings. There is a large section of people waiting to be able to celebrate & curate larger than life celebrations. This segment is ever-evolving and a changing one at that. But what remains constant is the desire for human connection and the celebration of love and togetherness with close friends and family while weaving new memories over great food experiences and entertainment, and that trend is surely here to stay!
