To become CISSP certified, you need more than just passing the Certified Information Systems Security Professional certification exam. Applicants must demonstrate at least five years of full-time practical experience in at least two of the eight cybersecurity knowledge areas.

(ISC)² recommends that applicants follow a four-step certification path, starting with determining that the CISSP credentials are correct for them. (ISC)² recommends CISSP certification for candidates with experienced cybersecurity professionals and lists a number of positions that are suitable for CISSP, including Chief Information Officer, Chief Information Officer, Security Director, IT Manager, Security Systems, Security Analyst, security manager, security auditor, security architect, security consultant and network architect.

The recommended next step (ISC) is to prepare and register for the Certification Exam. Preparation can be done through self-study and CISSP textbooks and training manuals, as well as online practice exams. Many candidates also take admission in CISSP training courses to prepare for the exam.
