The summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir became the third Indian city on this list after Mumbai and Hyderabad.
“We have been trying to find a place for Srinagar city in the UNESCO list for the last four years,” Saleem Beg, convener of the J&K chapter of INTACH (Indian National Trust For Art And Cultural Heritage) told IANS.
Forty-nine cities such as Bohicon, Doha and Jakarta were added to the pre-existing network of 246 cities following their designation by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.
According to a release posted on the official website, the UCCN was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The 295 cities reaching 90 countries that invest in culture and creativity—crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts, and music—currently make up this network to work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level.
